ZEN AND THE ART OF DENTAL HYGIENE

By CATHERINE

Everything is transient.  I read that in 2005 on page 18 of The Three Pillars of Zen.

Nowhere better epitomizes this than the dreaded dentist’s chair.

The other day, Regina, my hygienist, made her way around my mouth, as I tried to simultaneously focus on being present with the cleaning she was administering and not getting caught up in the discomfort.

BROTHERS AND THERAPY

By ALLEN ALLENSWORTH IV

Guest Blogger

People respond to adversity in a lot of ways. Some people try to find themselves. Others turn to God. Still others turn to sex, drugs, and/or rock and roll. If you’re a black man, you have a lot of options, but finding yourself isn’t one of them. Especially if it means going to therapy. Black men may go to church or the titty bar, but we don’t go to therapy.  I don’t mean court-ordered counseling or your cousin over a drink (probably at the titty bar). I don’t mean couple’s counseling. I mean one-on-one with a clinically trained, board certified, MD-having, drug-prescribing psychiatrist.

THIS YOUNG ADULT NOVEL'S TUGGING AT MY HEART

By CATHERINE

Yes, you can judge a book by its cover. The evolution of the little gray T-shirt from rigid and boxy to something a little more comfortable-looking to something downright pretty grabbed my attention. The magnetic effect of this cover put my hands on autopilot, and I pulled the book off the shelf.

The back cover sold me!  Again, the same three gray T's, but this time with the tiniest hint of the story inside...

GRATITUDE IS OUR SAVING GRACE

by ELIZABETH

Yesterday, something happened that knocked me off center.  It triggered a vicious whirlpool of worries that sucked at my energy, my peace, my joy, my concentration.

This was infuriating because I wanted to spend the entire day writing with turbo-charged mental and physical stamina.

But suddenly all I wanted to do was go to sleep.

Or cry.

“You have to send love to the situation,” Catherine said.  “Negativity only makes it worse.  Just concentrate on sending positive energy to resolve it.”

She was telling me what I already knew — and do — most of the time.

UNIVERSE AFFIRMS THAT A POT OF GOLD AWAITS YOUR PASSIONATE PURSUIT OF LIFE PURPOSE

by ELIZABETH

Sometimes you just KNOW when the universe is speaking directly to you!

Loudly.

And clearly.

That just happened for these two sisters who are passionately pursuing our life purpose by writing and publishing books.

“This is beautiful!” I exclaimed after Catherine texted a photo of the interior page design in her first novel, Veronica, I Heard Your Mom's is Black.

MEDITATION IS A MAGICAL ELIXIR FOR PEACE, SPIRITUAL EMPOWERMENT, CREATIVITY, BETTER HEALTH, AND MUCH MORE

by ELIZABETH

My brain was a cyclone, spinning over too many things at once.

Tension gripped my muscles.

So, as I do most days, I did yoga in my living room — usually The Five Tibetans or a Kundalini routine with Maya Fiennes.

Yoga opens the chakras, boosts intuition, and elevates me to high-frequency channels to crystal-clear meditation.

So, after the exhilarating, body-soothing movements of yoga, I lay on the couch under a plush blanket, cover my eyes, listen to sonic driver drumming music, and slip into a theta brainwave state.

NUTRIBULLET Rx IS POWERFUL PRESCRIPTION FOR YOUR BEST HEALTH!

by ELIZABETH

Bigger and better!

That’s the verdict on my new NutriBullet Rx.

It replaced my regular NutriBullet after it konked out earlier this month.

As I wrote in a recent post, I panicked during NutriBullet breakdown, because I’ve been drinking two kale smoothies every day for years!  This nutritional blast fuels my energy every day to write, work out, and stay super healthy.

It’s not something I ever want to skip.

But, turns out, the busted blender was a blessing in disguise.

FUN WITH FRIENDS ALLOWS INNER CHILD TO COME OUT AND PLAY

by ELIZABETH

Have you let your inner child out to play lately?

It’s so easy to keep him or her locked up and deprived of fun as we tend to the responsibilities of being grown.  I’m guilty of that when I get in my writing groove; I want to invest every ounce of energy and every minute into my work.

Actually, I feel like I play with words all day, so it doesn’t really feel like work because I love it so much!

But it’s really important to take a break from work and have fun with friends.

DANCE LIKE NO ONE IS WATCHING!

by ELIZABETH

“Come on, Elizabeth, dance with us,” my cousins called from the dance floor.

“No, that’s okay right now,” I said, not budging from my chair.  “Maybe later.”

Maybe not.

Tears stung my eyes.

I dashed outside to a terrace overlooking the mountains of Kentucky.  Never mind the signs warning of bears lurking in the pitch-black woods all around me.

Deep down, I was so sad.
