WATCHING A SPECTACULAR SHOW AND MEETING ITS LEGENDARY CREATOR INSPIRE A POWERFUL MESSAGE ABOUT MAKING YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!
SAY THANK YOU TO YOUR TEACHERS NOW - CARPE DIEM!
Whether the music was eliciting bliss or an abyss of sadness, listening to it prompted me to marvel at the creative genius of composer Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, recipient of seven Tonys, three Grammys, the Grammy Legend Award, an Academy Award, and knighthood from Queen Elizabeth!
It is absolutely enchanting to indulge his magical orchestration of soul-stirring lyrics and melodies that contrast and fuse in a delicious dance in my ears. Many times his music has made me stop singing along and instead sit silently in awe at how it seems to tickle every cell in my body.
So imagine my absolute thrill when I actually met Lord Webber!
“ROMANCE A LA CARTE” IS A DELICIOUS ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
They both gasped, “What?”
I read aloud the words from my computer screen: “‘BARBARA, Beloved wife of the late Norman Gross, passed away…’ She died in February.”
My heart sank. Then it rose, remembering that I had told her how important she was to me and how much I loved her. This, our father instilled in us when we were very young, was the meaning of life: to love and ensure those you loved knew you loved them.
NASHVILLE PHYSICIAN & HEALTHCARE EXECUTIVE PENS INSPIRING MEMOIR
By SASHA MAXWELL
Let’s admit, it’s a rare life occurrence – a miracle, actually – to find EVERYTHING you desire all wrapped up in one person.
So think of Romance à la Carte as being in the restaurant of life, where the menu fails to offer one entrée containing the exact appetizer, soup, meat/fish, starch, vegetable, salad, dessert, and beverage that you’re craving.
What do you do? You order your favorite items separately. Got it?
SASHA MAXWELL: GUEST BLOGGER OFFERS A PROVOCATIVE LOOK AT LUST, LIFE AND LOVE
“I need a ghostwriter for my book,” said the LinkedIn message from Herman J. Williams, MD during the summer of 2014.
We scheduled a phone call—and it lasted two hours!
Herman and I clicked immediately.

LIFE IS SWEET AS A BOWL OF CHERRIES – UNTIL YOU SWALLOW A PIT!
I always dreamed about being on The Oprah Winfrey Show. I would visualize the experience in great detail, imagining the feeling of sitting in the big yellow chairs on her set, and pressing my fingers to the cool leather.
In June of 2002, I was sitting on the set of Harpo Studios in Chicago, pressing my trembling palms to the cool yellow leather of Oprah’s armchairs.
Because I was living my visualization as a guest on her show!
MAGIC MOMENTS MAKE LIFE SPARKLE
I was having a super productive Saturday, as my fingers danced across the keyboard. I was snacking on sweet summer cherries from a pretty crystal bowl that was my grandmother’s. They were so delicious!
I swallowed a few pits, but have always done that, so I didn’t give it a second thought.
Until I felt like one was stuck in my throat.

“…the sun sparkled on the light chop of waves as if God had sprinkled a million diamonds over Lake St. Clair.”
— Husbands, Incorporated by Elizabeth Ann Atkins
This morning, that image reflected back at me when I stopped during a bike ride to meditate and pray beside the lake.
For long, amazing moments, I marveled at the sun sparkling on the water, which danced to the tune of a gentle breeze and caressed the jagged rocks. My gaze followed the trail of sparkles all the way to the edge of the world, where the sun was making a silvery puddle on the horizon.
INTERRACIAL YOUNG ADULT BOOKS COMING SOON!
I am 4.4 pounds overweight. Winter's comfort and stress eating and a general inconsistency in movement caused a bunch of extra pounds to grab onto my body.
Some still haven't let go -- even though it's July!
Just the other day I was thinking what a great spokesperson and role model Oprah Winfrey is for Weight Watchers. Despite being more personally and professionally successful than some small nations, at her core, she's just one of us, reminding us that we are all connected by our struggles and successes.
BEST SELF JOURNAL #1
Veronica, I Heard Your Mom's Black
Now that people are making a big deal about her black mother and white father, Veronica’s world is changed forever. But how does she find herself in everybody else’s confusion? In all the chaos?
Veronica’s hair is wild, and no one will shut up about it. Her mother wants to know if her friends “know.” She’s always been mixed, but now suddenly she’s questioning herself.
Her so-called friends are talking about her behind her back—and other people are saying obnoxious things to her face. How will she figure out where she fits in?
DANCING TO THE TUNE OF SUMMER SUNSHINE BLISS
I burned most of my journals years ago. They mainly chronicled stream of consciousness complaints made semi-permanent as I tried to make sense of feelings and emotions. The stuff I wrote about was mostly negative––because why interrupt happy, joyful occasions to write how great life is? Generally, when life is good, I'm in the present moment enjoying it!
About 10 years ago I made a concerted attempt to write in my journal when I was happy, but that just meant journaling less.
HELLO, WORLD! IF YOU'RE READING THIS, I HAD THE COURAGE TO HIT SEND!
A baby bunny... a male and female cardinal... a big white cat... a chipmunk... a blue jay.
All these friendly critters fluttered and scampered around me while doing yoga in the warm summer sunshine.
Mother Nature provided the soundtrack of chirping birds, and the soft breeze rustling in the treetops, along with my favorite Bill Withers song, Steppin' Right Along. It’s the most soul-stirring rendition of The Lord’s Prayer — and it made me twirl in a joyful dance all by my damn self.
IMPROVISE WHEN YOU GRAB THE WRONG SPICE!
By JORDAN BAKER
Got the green light months ago. Have not, in spite of myself, had the ability, courage, energy to proceed.
Until now, though even as I type these words, I'm not sure I have the gumption to hit send.
DON'T QUIT YOUR DAYDREAM!
I am a spice nut, and yes my spices are arranged alphabetically on a prominent shelf in my kitchen.
I keep the cinnamon, ground cloves, and nutmeg on a separate shelf -- away from the parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
This morning, however, the cumin, having made its way to the wrong spot on the wrong shelf, landed in my hand and performed a sprinkling dance over my oatmeal.
ZEN AND THE ART OF DENTAL HYGIENE
These words, written in gold glitter, sparkle on my office wall as I work on books all day and into the night.
For Catherine and me, our writing life began with a daydream. Daydreams are most delicious when they seem far off. But when you do the work, you can make them happen, and they become REAL!
MOTHER'S DAY MEMOIR ANNOUNCEMENT!
Everything is transient. I read that in 2005 on page 18 of The Three Pillars of Zen.
Nowhere better epitomizes this than the dreaded dentist’s chair.
The other day, Regina, my hygienist, made her way around my mouth, as I tried to simultaneously focus on being present with the cleaning she was administering and not getting caught up in the discomfort.

Two Sisters Writing and Publishing explodes with enthusiasm as we type these words: our amazing mother, retired Chief Judge of Detroit's 36th District Court Marylin Atkins, has written her memoir, and we are going to publish it!
The Triumph of Rosemary: A Memoir will be out this summer!
“Idlewild: A Place in the Sun” now available on DVD
By ALLEN ALLENSWORTH IV
People respond to adversity in a lot of ways. Some people try to find themselves. Others turn to God. Still others turn to sex, drugs, and/or rock and roll. If you’re a black man, you have a lot of options, but finding yourself isn’t one of them. Especially if it means going to therapy. Black men may go to church or the titty bar, but we don’t go to therapy. I don’t mean court-ordered counseling or your cousin over a drink (probably at the titty bar). I don’t mean couple’s counseling. I mean one-on-one with a clinically trained, board certified, MD-having, drug-prescribing psychiatrist.
MEN DON'T DO INTROSPECTION
Producer Ted Talbert’s 1995 documentary, “Idlewild: A Place in the Sun,” is now available on DVD. All proceeds from the sales will benefit the Idlewild Historic & Cultural Center.

I’m a man. Nowadays, that doesn’t tell you much. Gender roles – hell, gender itself – have become more fluid.
That’s generally speaking a good thing, but for old heads like me it’s a change. It also blurs the image that the statement, “I’m a man” once conveyed.
So let me be more specific...
